The electricity sector is no stranger to digital transformation. Advances in technology have been driving energy efficiency, improvements in the distribution grid, supply quality and a wide range of services to customers.
Iberdrola has already installed more than 10 million smart meters in Spain. This deployment is a clear example of the company's commitment to providing an efficient and quality service to its customers, ensuring that its electrical network is prepared for future services and requirements, and also contributing to the development of the countries in which it operates.
A smart grid is an energy distribution system based on technological breakthroughs and which combines three elements: traditional electrical equipment, electronic meters and information and communications systems so the information can be received remotely. By doing so, we can quickly and precisely detect whenever lines are affected by incidents and resolve them in less time or even anticipate overload situations.
Adaptation to a smart grid allows us to monitor and act remotely and instantaneously and automatically on the electrical and electronic network, thus anticipating possible incidents, quickly managing any that occur and improving the quality of service to customers. Similarly, the valuable information provided by smart meters can be used to cover any requirements customers may have about everything relating to their supply point, so that they can make decisions based on their detailed information.
Iberdrola employs the highest international standards and robust encryption algorithms of the highest security standards to guarantee the authenticity, confidentiality and privacy of all its digital equipment. In addition, smart meters use high-security cryptographic keys, according to internationally established industry standards that allow data packets to be encrypted and authenticated.
The latest generation of smart grids are flexible, secure, efficient and sustainable, and the digitisation of the grid makes it easier to manage an increasingly active network and the future mass integration of electric vehicles. The information received on the operation of the grid -through big data and advanced analysis- allows for the optimisation of investments and the improvement of maintenance tasks, as well as the digitisation of customer service processes.
