Prevention

Prevention.

For i-DE workplace risk prevention is a matter of paramount importance, which takes priority over all other aspects.

In order to achieve "zero accidents", i-DE carries out the following actions in this area:

  • It brings prevention to attention by consolidating safety in all processes and at all levels in the organisation.
  • Investment in improving plant safety.
  • Provision and renovation of personal and collective protective equipment, and improvement in work clothes and tools.
  • Continual monitoring of employee and contractor staff activities.
  • Ongoing prevention training and retraining.
  • Demanding monitoring of training activities for contractors and their prevention plants.
  • Work inspections of employees and contractor staff.
  • Investigation and reporting throughout the organisation of any accidents and incidents that occur.
  • Strengthening of safety coordinator positions: "Leaders in safety" for internal staff and "Contract administrators" for contractor personnel.
  • Teams in participation, continuous improvement in safe conduct and excellence in preventive culture: RADAR programme.
  • Application of the best practices, as defined by the Global Practice Groups, between Iberdrola's distribution companies.
  • Risk prevention information campaigns via the publication of Iberdrola Network Express (INE), safety guides and leaflets, and prevention news that helps keep training up to date.

All these activities are managed through a Workplace Risk Prevention Management System, certified to the OSHAS 18001 standard, which includes the safety policy, objectives and programmes, duties and responsibilities, procedures, the methods and results of risk assessments and the controls established. This system enables us to systematise, manage and guarantee fulfilment of all the requirements in connection with workplace risk prevention.

Prevention for groups

Prevention in our facilities

Prevention policy and the 5 essentials

i-DE has reduced its incident rate by 37% in the last five years. Worker health and safety comes first, ahead of environmental safety and that of the facilities. It is part of the Iberdrola group's vision and values and is central to our decision-making and everything we do.

PREVENTION POLICY

i-DE has a Work Health and Safety Policy [PDF] approved by the Board of Directors.

5 ESSENTIALS

We trust ourselves to put into practice the core principles that will keep ourselves, our contractors, customers and the general public safe on a daily basis.

These principles are common-sense and easily understandable and they complement the best practices we already implement. In fact, that is how we already work. However, if we put them into practice, they will continue to keep us all safe and promote the type of culture and environment where we all want to work. These are our Core Principles for Health and Safety:

  • We monitor all our processes, rules and procedures.
  • We promote health and well-being both inside and outside of work.
  • We only take on work that we can perform proficiently.
  • We take care of others and work as a team.
  • We think before we act, assessing and managing risks.

RESULTS

i-DE's results have improved significantly in recent years:

  • For our own personnel, the incident rate (accidents involving more than one day of sick leave per 100 workers) has dropped by 58% in the last 5 years.
  • For contractors, there has been a 39% reduction in the rate of incidents entailing leave in the last 5 years, a 14% reduction compared with 2015.

In 2016, the contractor accident rate stood at 0.57%, in line with the on-going fall over recent years.
