The aim of distributing electricity is to transmit electricity from the transmission grids or from the generating plants connected to the distribution grid itself to the points of consumption under appropriate quality conditions with the ultimate aim of supplying electricity to customers.
In general terms, distribution installations are understood to mean all lines, transformer faciities and other electrical elements with a voltage below 220 kV, except for certain exceptions described in the Electricity Sector Act.

In order to increase the competitiveness and efficiency of electricity grids, maintaining the security of energy supply to consumers, the European Union has adopted several Regulations that apply a series of fair and harmonised rules for managing the network access, cross-border electricity trade and security of the European electricity network operation. These regulations establish minimum enforceable requirements and specific guidelines which affect significant grid users and network operators in different ways.
These regulations are brought together into three categories:
They coordinate the grid connection requirements to be met by new generation, demand facilities that provide demand response services and direct current systems.
Criteria governing for the security of the network operation.
They set the guidelines for achieving an interconnected and fully functioning internal energy market
The above regulations delegate other specific aspects to the opinion of each country. The transposition of these guidelines into Spain is being carried out through ad hoc working groups.
