At i-DE we work intensively and continuously every day to improve our customer service, network operations and reliability. To achieve this, we have introduced best practices in each of our areas of activity.
The success of the following projects and actions is the result of our commitment to excellence and the innovative effort that has always characterised us.
Through the STAR project (Remote Management and Network Automation System), with an investment of 2,000 million euros, i-DE has installed more than 10.7 million digital meters and has provided more than 99,000 transformation centres with remote management and automation capabilities.
This innovation enables us to offer our customers superior levels of supply quality. In addition, we provide you with more precise and detailed information about your consumption through digital channels.
The regulatory requirement to install remote management meters included only type 5 supplies (less than 15kW). However, in order to increase efficiency in reading, measurement and processes that rely on remote management, while focusing on the client, i-DE has added the following objectives:
Once this project is completed, STAR+ is born, an initiative with a temporary scope of four years (2017-2020) that focuses on improving the low voltage network (LV). Within the framework of this program, we are working on the development of new functionalities of greater relevance for optimising the low-voltage network, such as automatic connectivity or incident prediction with existing technology.
i-DE is committed to becoming a Distribution System Operator (DSO) and, to this end, is advancing in the development of technologies and systems that enable the management of distributed energy resources (mainly batteries and photovoltaic plants), as well as active demand management.
This will give customers flexibility and control over their behaviour in future scenarios. A future scenario that has been simulated in the micro-network of the Iberdrola Campus, in Madrid. The facilities consist of two photovoltaic plants, three battery storage systems and a control system, on which applications have been developed for control based on the services and use cases that will contribute to the network.
The quality of supply translates into reliability and security in the service we provide to all customers. Thanks to the renewal and maintenance of the network, we have reduced the number of incidents and the supply replacement time.
The supply quality is measured through two main indicators:
Both indicators have fallen by more than 60% in the last decade. TIEPI has gone from more than two hours to below one, while NIEPI has dropped from two and a half times to about one.
By 31 December 2018, i-DE had contributed to the connection of a total of 41,633 installations, which add up to an installed power of 18,267 MW in 2018 a total of 41,129 GWh was fed into the grid.
Electricity fraud has a direct and significant impact on the pockets of the customers who pay their bills, as they also pay for the electricity the fraudsters consume for free. On the other hand, illegal connections to the electricity grid and meter tampering entail a high risk to people's safety and physical integrity, as they are carried out illegally, without regard for the prevailing technical regulations and without the necessary safety measures. It should also be borne in mind that this type of fraud is covered by the Criminal Code and may constitute a crime.
In compliance with the functions and obligations established by the regulations covering the Spanish electricity sector, i-DE carries out work to detect and regulate situations involving fraudulent electricity flows. We are able to accurately and efficiently detect 100% of fraudulent cases using cutting-edge technology.

I-DE's track record in R&D demonstrates our permanent interest in innovation without losing sight of the practical approach and improvements in customer service. The effort and dedication of a highly qualified technical team and the collaboration of our long term partners (universities, technology centres and national companies) have allowed us to achieve valuable results which, when implemented in the grid, have benefited the end client.
At Networks, we work with our sights set on the future: we are moving towards digitalisation, new technologies and new services for our clients, as well as a new way of designing, building, exploiting and maintaining our assets. Innovation is our main tool to effectively achieve all the goals we set ourselves.
In addition, i-DE is focussing its efforts on digitisation with a view to transforming the conventional grid into a smart grid, capable of intelligently integrating the behaviour and actions of all the clients connected to it (generators, consumers and those who perform both actions) to provide a secure, economical and sustainable electricity supply. This allows the distributor to fully exercise the role of Distribution System Operator (DSO).
The environmental aspect is fundamental when it comes to designing, constructing and maintaining our networks. i-DE works on reducing the main environmental risks by implementing prevention and control measures such as installing oil collection systems to prevent transformer spills, identifying and correcting SF6 gas leaks, and managing existing vegetation around our networks to prevent forest fires.
We also regularly replace power lines to reduce the risk of birds being electrocuted and to guarantee quality of supply.
